How to Decorate Your Home for Halloween

Whether you’re into the spooky aspect of Halloween or not, you probably have to admit that it’s a fun time of year. People go out of their ways to dress up their homes and themselves to be something scary, funny, or just different from what they are the other 364 days of the year.

When it comes to your house, decorating can seem like a real challenge, since you have so much space to work with. There are fun ways to decorate for Halloween without being tacky or making your spaces seem cluttered.

From graveyards to window ghosts to cardboard cutouts, let’s cover three ways to decorate your home for Halloween.

  1. Spookify Your Front Yard

It doesn’t matter if you’re having trick-or-treaters in your house or not: your front yard is a great place for Halloween decorations because that area presents your property’s spooky flavor to all who pass by.

With a front yard, you have the space to construct a whole scene, such as a haunted graveyard. You can put up fake headstones, stick some ghosts and witches in the ground, and string fake spider webs between hedges, trees, and fences. A scary front yard can be a great introduction to the decorations around the rest of your house, so put sufficient thought and attention into this, and you will be off to a good start.

  1. Go for the Realistic

One thing to keep in mind when you decorate for Halloween is to go for realistic-looking accessories. Realistic is scary, and you definitely want to be as frightening as possible, don’t you?

Halloween cardboard cutouts are a great avenue to take here. Considering that they’re life-sized and based on actual images, they’re about as close to the real things as you’re going to get. You can get a 62-inch cutout of the angel of death or a 72-inch Bloody Mary. Stick these in your front yard scene, in a window looking out, or in a dark corner of the living or dining room.

These lifelike cardboard cutouts are sure to give a good scare to anyone who catches a glimpse of them.

  1. Have Fun with Windows

Keeping in line with giving people a good scare from outside, don’t forget that you can play around with decorations in your windows! You can get huge cat-face decals for two adjacent windows to make it look like a giant, creepy black cat is looking out at the neighborhood.

Another simple idea is to set up a stick ghost in an upper-floor window and illuminate it with candle lights or a white backlight. That way, when people’s eyes venture to your second story, they will be greeted with yet another creepy image.

These three ideas only scratch the surface of all you can do with Halloween decorations this year.
