Anne Frank was born Annelies Marie Frank on June 12, 1929, in Frankfurt, Germany, to Otto and Edith Frank. In 1933, the Frank family fled to Amsterdam to escape the rising tide of anti-Semitism under the Nazi regime. However, when the Nazis invaded the Netherlands in 1940, the Frank family’s safety was once again threatened.
In July 1942, the Frank family went into hiding in a secret annex behind Otto Frank’s business premises. It was during this time, in the confinement of the annex, that Anne began writing her now-famous diary. She documented her thoughts, fears, hopes, and the day-to-day life of those in hiding, providing an intimate and poignant account of their experiences.

The Frank family’s time in hiding came to an end in August 1944 when they were betrayed and arrested by the Gestapo. Anne and her sister Margot were eventually deported to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where they both died of typhus in March 1945, just weeks before the camp was liberated.
After the war, Otto Frank, the sole survivor of the family, found Anne’s diary and decided to publish it, fulfilling Anne’s wish to become a writer. "The Diary of a Young Girl" was first published in 1947 and has since been translated into numerous languages, touching the hearts of millions around the world.
