By Mylius - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, 46x90 inch cardboard cutout of a building complex reconstructed after the damage during World War II. The Battle of Frankfurt in March 1945 saw American forces fight house-to-house to secure the city, which finally fell to the Allies by the end of the month. Both the British Royal Air Force (RAF) and the US Eighth Air Force conducted numerous bombing raids, resulting in the destruction of Frankfurt's historic medieval city center and the deaths of more than 5,000 residents.
